Turbinectomy in Long Island, NY

The nasal turbinates are structures inside the nose that moisten and warm air that moves through the nasal cavity. Abnormalities with the turbinates may require a turbinectomy. For residents in Long Island, Queens and surrounding communities in New York, Eunice E. Park, MD, is a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon and ear, nose, and throat (otolaryngology) specialist who offers turbinectomy surgery.

What is Turbinectomy?

Nasal turbinates are anatomical structures that are located inside the nose and on the side of the nose. These ridges of tissue help moisten and warm the air that passes through your nasal cavity and play an important role in breathing. The turbinates also help filter out impurities in the air we breathe. If the turbinates become enlarged, you may have trouble breathing through your nose. Dr. Park may recommend medication, and if this does not help, she may recommend turbinectomy surgery.

Benefits of Turbinectomy

The goal of turbinectomy surgery is to remove portions of the nasal turbinates to improve breathing and reduces the risk of infection and complications.

Am I a Candidate for Turbinectomy?

You may be a candidate for turbinectomy surgery if you have been unsuccessful with controlling the following symptoms with more conservative approaches, such as medications.

  • Nasal congestion
  • Sinus problems
  • Sleep apnea

What to Expect from Turbinectomy

A turbinectomy removes portions of the soft tissue and bony structures of the nasal turbinates. Dr. Park may perform the procedure with an endoscope. A special instrument is used to remove some of the soft tissue. A second instrument is used to remove a small amount of the bony area of the nasal turbinates. If the procedure results in bleeding from the edges of the soft tissue, a device may be used to cauterize the tissue. Your nose may be packed to control swelling and bleeding.

Recovery from turbinectomy surgery depends on the extent of the procedure. Dr. Park will explain your recovery and the anticipated results of the surgery during your consultation appointment.
