Scar Revision in Long Island, NY

No matter the size, a scar can be an embarrassing cosmetic problem for men and women in Long Island, Queens and surrounding communities in New York. Eunice E. Park, MD, a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon and ear, nose, and throat (otolaryngology) specialist, offers scar revision to minimize the appearance of scars.

What is Scar Revision?

Scars develop because of the way your body responds to a skin injury. When you cut your skin, or an incision is made, the opening triggers the body to quickly close the wound to prevent infection. The process works by stimulating the production of collagen fibers which are arranged in a rather disordered way. This is why a scar has a different color and texture than the surrounding skin. No treatment can completely eliminate a scar, but scar revision can help the scar blend in better with the surrounding skin.

Benefits of Scar Revision

Scar revision is a quick and easy procedure that can be performed with laser technology, dermal fillers or Mohs reconstruction.

  • Laser treatments may help improve the texture of the scar.
  • Dermal fillers may add volume to the scar tissue to fill in any depressions.
  • Mohs reconstruction may reduce the size and/or improve the shape of the scar.

Dr. Park may recommend a combination of these techniques for your scar revision procedure.

Am I a Candidate for Scar Revision?

Knowing if you are a good candidate for scar revision depends on the nature of your scar. Dr. Park may recommend scar revision for:

  • Scars with depressions where the collagen did not completely cover the wound (atrophic scars)
  • Scars that are raised up from the skin surface due to the over-production of collagen (hypertrophic scars)
  • Keloids, which are a more advanced type of hypertrophic scars and common amongst people with darker skin

What to Expect from Scar Revision

Treatment for your scar is not intended to make the scar completely disappear, but rather to camouflage the scar to a greater degree. Dr. Park will explain the anticipated results of your scar revision during the consultation.

How Mohs Reconstruction Can Help

Mohs reconstruction may help with your scar. The surgical technique is performed in cases where very small, even microscopic, tissue modifications are required.
