Hoarseness in Long Island, NY

Changes in your voice may indicate that you have hoarseness. This condition can be diagnosed and treated by Eunice E. Park, MD, a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon and ear, nose, and throat (otolaryngology) specialist. Dr. Park offers services for hoarseness to the residents of Long Island, Queens and surrounding communities in New York.

What is Hoarseness?

Hoarseness occurs when obstructions block the airway through the larynx, or voice box. Normally air passes through folds of tissue to create sound. When you have inflammation or lumps in this tissue, your voice will change. The condition may be caused by:

  • Misusing your voice, such as speaking too loudly or yelling for a prolonged period of time
  • Talking too much
  • Straining when you sing
  • Talking with a pitch that is higher or lower than your normal voice
  • Holding a phone on your shoulder with your chin
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Polyps, cysts, and nodules
  • Hemorrhage of the soft tissue
  • Acid reflux
  • Smoking
  • Certain medical conditions

Benefits of Treatment for Hoarseness

Hoarseness may be related to allergies or a cold, but the condition may also be related to a more serious concern. Dr. Park determines why you have hoarseness, and she recommend treatments that alleviate the problem and prevent complications.

What are the Common Symptoms of Hoarseness?

Hoarseness is a term that describes any type of change in your voice, such as being:

  • Raspy
  • Strained
  • Softer or louder
  • Higher or lower
  • Breathy

How is Hoarseness Diagnosed and Treated?

Dr. Park will discuss your symptoms, including when the symptoms started, the severity and any situations that may have caused your voice loss. A physical examination lets her see inside your throat and determine if your lymph nodes are swollen. She may take samples of mucous and tissue to see if you have a bacterial or viral component of your hoarseness. If she determines that the problem is in the soft tissue around the voice box, she may use a special scope to look further down your throat.

Treatment may involve resting your voice, taking medications and making lifestyle changes. Surgery may be required for any growths that are causing your hoarseness.

How Much Does Treatment for Hoarseness Cost in Long Island, NY?
