Ear Tubes in Long Island, NY
Ear infections are a common problem amongst children living in Long Island, Queens and surrounding communities in New York. Chronic or frequent ear infections require advanced treatment, such as ear tubes. Eunice E. Park, MD, is a dual board-certified facial plastic surgeon and ear, nose, and throat (otolaryngology) specialist who offers ear tube treatments.
What are Ear Tubes?
Ear tubes are medical devices that are used in patients who experience chronic or frequent ear infections. The procedure is most often performed on children, but adults may also be candidates for ear tubes in some cases. Dr. Park may recommend ear tubes for a patient who has a history of ear infections or signs of fluid buildup in the middle ear.
Benefits of Ear Tubes
If left untreated, frequent ear infections and fluid buildup may lead to:
- Problems with speech
- Changes in behavior and performance at school or work
- Hearing loss
Ear tubes work by opening the canal through which fluid drains from the inner ear.
Am I a Candidate for Ear Tubes?
Patients with the following symptoms may be candidates for ear tubes:
- Frequent infections in the middle ear
- Excess fluid in the middle ear that may lead to hearing loss
- Problems with balance and speech
Certain medical conditions may also indicate a need for ear tubes, such as:
- Anatomical changes to the ear drum
- Abnormalities of the Eustachian tubes
- Cleft palate
- Middle ear injuries caused by changes in pressure, such as during an airplane flight
What to Expect from Ear Tubes
Ear tubes may remain in place for six to 18 months or longer. The tubes work by allowing air into the middle ear which promotes adequate draining of the middle ear. Ear tubes that are intended for shorter periods of time will fall out without medical intervention. Tubes that are intended for longer use may fall out, but typically require Dr. Park to remove them. The ear tube is a tiny cylindrical device that is inserted through the ear drum.
