Ear Infections in Long Island, NY

Children, adolescents, and adults may experience ear infections for a range of reasons. For the residents of Long Island, Queens and surrounding communities in New York, Eunice E. Park, MD, who is dual board-certified in facial plastic surgery and ear, nose and throat (otolaryngology), offers diagnostic testing and treatment for ear infections.

What are Ear Infections?

Ear infections occur in the middle ear and require treatment. Mild to moderate ear infections may cause discomfort, and more advanced cases could lead to hearing loss. Although the condition is most common amongst younger patients, adults may also develop ear infections. Treatment is based upon the nature of the ear infection, as those caused by viruses and those caused by bacteria require different approaches.

Ear infections generally occur when fluid or mucous does not drain properly from the Eustachian tubes. The resulting buildup creates an environment that is perfect for an infection to take hold.

Benefits of Treatment for Ear Infections

Treatment for an ear infection helps to eliminate the bacteria or virus and alleviate symptoms. It may also prevent complications and future occurrences.

What are the Common Symptoms of Ear Infections?

The direct symptoms of an ear infection may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Problems hearing
  • A feeling that the ear is clogged
  • Drainage from the ear
  • Pain
  • Fever
  • Vomiting

The symptoms may worsen when you lay down, eat or drink.

Recognizing symptoms in your child presents a challenge, so you can look for indirect signs, such as:

  • Tugging at the ear
  • Having problems with balance or hearing, especially softer sounds
  • Crying, restlessness, and inability to sleep

How are Ear Infections Diagnosed and Treated?

A small scope is used to illuminate and examine the inside of the ear. Dr. Park will look for signs of infection, such as redness or inflammation, fluid, and ruptures. If the ear infection is mild, Dr. Park may recommend waiting to see if the body resolves the problem without intervention. Moderate to severe cases may require oral medications, ear drops and perhaps, surgery. Some children benefit from ear tubes to help with chronic ear infections.
