4 Things to Know Before Getting Your Ears Pinned

It’s not something that is talked about when it comes to beauty standards–ears. But, if you’re one of the many who struggles with self-confidence as a result of the shape and size of your ears, you understand how important how ears look really are. Maybe you’ve been picked on. Or, maybe you’re sick of not being able to wear your hair in a ponytail. Whatever the reason, it may be time to think about an otoplasty. Or, in other words, getting your ears pinned.

While this procedure is relatively safe and simple, there are a few things a patient should know before choosing to go about an otoplasty.

#1: Anyone at Any Age can Have One

Typically, the patients who undergo otoplasties are children. Optimally, the best age for this procedure is around 5 years old. But, most kids won’t start feeling the impact of the appearance of their ears until they’re around 10. However, even teenagers and adults get this procedure, as it can be performed at any age.

#2: There is Minimal Pain

It may seem like having your ears pinned will hurt. But, surprisingly, this surgery doesn’t hurt that much. Most patients can expect to receive anesthesia. However, some patients can get away with only receiving local anesthesia if the results expected aren’t momentous. Additionally, recovery from this procedure doesn’t offer too much discomfort and only lasts about a month or two.

#3: It Requires the Use of Permanent Sutures

Most surgeries which require stitches use dissolvable sutures. However, with this surgery, permanent sutures are needed to hold the ears into place. So, they can’t be taken out. And, this needs to be considered if the patients is to go about any intense physical activity. While it’s still possible to do so, the patient should consider protecting the ears with a headband while playing sports or doing any other strenuous activity.

#4: It’s a Perfected Art

Not all plastic surgeons offer otoplasties. That’s because it’s a very specific skill set, and not all surgeons may have the experience to feel confident practicing this type of procedure. However, Dr. Park has been perfecting otoplasty procedures for many years and is one of the top surgeons to offer this procedure in both Long Island and Queens.
